National Nurses Week is quickly approaching! The celebration begins on May 6, 2019 (National Nurses Day) and continues through May 12 in honor of Florence Nightingale’s birthday, who is well-known as the founder of modern nursing. Nurses week began in 1993, when the American Nurses Association (ANA) declared May 6 – 12 the national week to celebrate and promote the nursing profession. This week is a time for nurses, other health care providers, community leaders, and everyone in between to acknowledge the positive impact and contributions of the 4 million registered nurses in America.

You may be wondering the best way to celebrate your nurses’ during this week. In preparation for National Nurses Week, we’ve pulled together a variety of ways to ensure each nurse in your facility feels appreciated and celebrated!

Promoting National Nurses Week in Your Facility

Promoting the holiday within your facility is an excellent way to kick things off. The ANA has pulled together a set of materials you can use to promote National Nurses Week in your organization. This kit includes a thank you card template, a large banner to display in your facility, a recognition certificate, National Nurses Week 2019 logos, and much more. You can find and download the entire collection here. While you’re checking out their celebration kit, make sure to browse the online store, as the ANA has also created a wide variety of 2019 National Nurses Week swag. Their store consists of items ranging from pens and water bottles to shirts and totes. This is a great place to find gifts for yourself or for a special nurse in your life, so go shop ‘til you drop!

Workplace Celebrations

Now that you have swag and promotional items, you can officially kick off the festivities. Here are a few ways to get the party started in your facility.

  • Hang banners, posters, and signs to promote National Nurses Week
  • Plan daily celebrations
          ○ Muffin and Bagel Monday
          ○ Taco Tuesday
  • Host a small awards ceremony within your facility
          ○ Biggest Smile
          Best Decorated Name Tag
  • Encourage other employees within the facility to write Thank You cards to the nurses on staff
