We recently had the privilege to visit one remarkable facility and host a CNOR Exam Prep Course for a group of exceptional and determined nurses. Part of Northern California's largest health network, Sutter Health, Sutter Medical Center, Sacramento, is made up of multiple facilities including Ose Adams Medical Pavilion, Anderson Luchetti Women's & Children's Center, and Sutter Center for Psychiatry. While each of these facilities offers patient care in different areas, they all work together to serve the surrounding Sacramento community with compassion and excellence.

Sutter Medical Center, Sacremento is a teaching hospital, providing unique and meaningful opportunities to medical professionals of all levels. Programs such as the Family Medicine Residency Program offer residents the opportunity to complete one year of inpatient training in Sacramento, followed by continued clinical experience in either Sacramento or Davis, CA. Additional educational opportunities, such as the live CCI-hosted CNOR Prep Course, are not uncommon at the facility. Sutter’s OR RN Training Program, developed by Renee Dodge and delivered by Sutter Health University, has generated great success over the years; resulting in a retention rate much higher than the national average, and more than 270 nurses successfully completing the program. Realizing there was a gap in training between nursing school and working in the OR, Sutter Health turned to Renee to find a way to prepare perioperative staff for their new role. This twelve-week program combines lectures, lab sessions, and live training to groom nurses for the OR. The program has proven successful, as over half of the nurses can scrub or circulate simple cases on their own after only twelve weeks of training.

Perioperative nurses at Sutter Medical Center, Sacramento are also encouraged to pursue certification as soon as they are eligible. Additionally, the facility offers its nurses an annual stipend for its nurses for use toward continued education and professional development. There are also three continuing educations days hosted every year at Sutter Medical Center, Sacramento.

The emphasis on teamwork, paired with the individual support offered at Sutter Medical Center, Sacramento, results in more empowered nurses and excellent patient care. Sutter Medical Center, Sacramento demonstrates its commitment to providing patients and their family excellent, personalized care through the many programs and classes they offer. The purpose of offering an extensive array of patient and family classes is to ensure all individual needs are met. In addition to birthing and parenting classes, nutrition, yoga, and more, the facility offers several surgery-related classes including Pre-Surgery Education Classes, Ostomy Support Groups, and Weight Loss Surgery Information Sessions. While each course has its own agenda and objectives, the ultimate goal of these classes is to prepare or support a person by familiarizing attendees with pre- and post-operative procedures and goals for recovery. The supportive environment these classes provide helps ease stress for surgical patients, which can often lead to faster recovery and wound healing.

In addition to supporting staff with adequate training and providing resources to current patients, Sutter Medical Center, Sacramento serves the community with compassion through the Street Nurse Program. The program, which began in 2016, allows nurse Amanda Buccina to take her expertise to the streets of Sacramento, providing on-demand care to more than 200 area homeless people in need. Whether it is providing immediate care or encouraging visits to a physician, the goal of the program is to meet the needs of the underserved in the community.

The commitment Sutter Medical Center, Sacramento has made to their employees, patients, and the surrounding community has gained the facility recognition, awards, and distinctions from many organizations over the years. For instance, Truven Health Analytics™ listed the facility as a Top 100 Hospital in 2016. Sutter Medical Center, Sacramento has also been named one of the nation’s 50 Top Cardiovascular Hospitals. As the only heart transplant center in Northern California, they hold this recognition in high regard.

Sutter Medical Center, Sacramento continues to strive for ways they can provide the community with compassion and excellence, offering the care each patient deserves. We are proud to honor them in this month’s hospital highlight.
