We recently had the privilege to visit one remarkable facility and host a CNOR Exam Prep Course for a group of exceptional and determined nurses. Part of Northern California's largest health network, Sutter Health, Sutter Medical Center, Sacramento, is made up of multiple facilities including Ose Adams Medical Pavilion, Anderson Luchetti Women's & Children's Center, and Sutter Center for Psychiatry. While each of these facilities offers patient care in different areas, they all work together to serve the surrounding Sacramento community with compassion and excellence.
Sutter Medical Center, Sacremento is a teaching hospital, providing unique and meaningful opportunities to medical professionals of all levels. Programs such as the Family Medicine Residency Program offer residents the opportunity to complete one year of inpatient training in Sacramento, followed by continued clinical experience in either Sacramento or Davis, CA. Additional educational opportunities, such as the live CCI-hosted CNOR Prep Course, are not uncommon at the facility. Sutter’s OR RN Training Program, developed by Renee Dodge and delivered by Sutter Health University, has generated great success over the years; resulting in a retention rate much higher than the national average, and more than 270 nurses successfully completing the program. Realizing there was a gap in training between nursing school and working in the OR, Sutter Health turned to Renee to find a way to prepare perioperative staff for their new role. This twelve-week program combines lectures, lab sessions, and live training to groom nurses for the OR. The program has proven successful, as over half of the nurses can scrub or circulate simple cases on their own after only twelve weeks of training.
Perioperative nurses at Sutter Medical Center, Sacramento are also encouraged to pursue certification as soon as they are eligible. Additionally, the facility offers its nurses an annual stipend for its nurses for use toward continued education and professional development. There are also three continuing educations days hosted every year at Sutter Medical Center, Sacramento.
