In 45 years as the leader of perioperative certification, [CCI](https://www.cc-institute.org/about-us/) has experienced significant milestones shaping the identity of the organization and leading to thousands of nurses pursuing perioperative certification all around the world. CCI’s birthday is December 6! 3. CCI’s original name was the Certification Board of Perioperative Nursing. 4. The organization adopted the name Competency and Credentialing Institute (CCI) in 2004. 5. The first certification program that CCI offered was [CNOR®](https://www.cc-institute.org/cnor/learn/)! 6. [AORN](https://www.aorn.org/), our industry partner, provided the seed money for CCI to start as an independent certification board. 7. Our very first president to serve on the Board of Directors in 1979 was Judy Pfister. 8. At CCI, we have 24 dedicated staff working to promote continuous professional development, which drives safe, quality patient care! 9. In 2018, CCI created a foundation to fund perioperative nursing research, the [CCI Research Foundation](https://cc-researchfoundation.org/). 10. And this year, in 2024, we are excited to be celebrating our 45th Anniversary!   ###### **What's Next?** With now 45 years of operation, certifying perioperative nurses around the world, CCI has not only emerged as a top credentialing body in perioperative certification, but as an organization passionate about lifelong learning and professional development.
